Yawkwawi, also known as Yawk for short, is a one-shot antagonist in the 2016 reboot of the classic Cartoon Network TV series Ben 10, appearing as the main antagonist of the episode, Mayhem in Mascot.
Initially appearing as just a wooden statue of a black bear in a desert town, he is actually an anthropomorphic stiff-legged bear that was cursed to turn into a statue whenever it's daytime. He attempted to trick Gwen Tennyson into helping him escape the valley in order to break free from his curse and become a powerful monster that can cause chaos throughout the desert and consume any human it encounters.
He is voiced by Keith David, who also played Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog, Thel 'Vadam in the Halo video game franchise, Big Tim in Requiem for a Dream, Tublat in The Legend of Tarzan, Thailog in Gargoyles, Streaming in Regular Show, Malcolm Kane in Stretch Armstrong & the Flex Fighters, Julius Little as well as Himself in the Saints Row series, Atlas in Teen Titans, Lord Marmoo in Kulipari: Army of Frogs, Thrull in The Last Kids on Earth, King Andrias in Amphibia, Psycho Delic in Megamind: Ultimate Showdown and Dr. Tenma in Pluto.
Biography
Early Life
Yawk used to be an ordinary grizzly bear, but he was cursed. As a result, he turns into a wooden statue during the day. In order to break the curse, he should escape the valley during sunrise.
Mayhem in Mascot
It is stated that the bear statue should be covered in cloth when it is night time. Ben and Gwen opened the cloth and the bear came to life. He told them that he needs help for his curse to break. Other statues also came to life to stop Yawk. Ben and Gwen helped him escape. Once he is about to go up the pile of rocks. Ben, who transformed into an alien destroyed the rocks and Yawk fell. Since that is day time and he fell to the valley, he turned into a statue and broke.
Appearance
Yawk's statue form is made of wood. During the night, he looks like a normal grizzly bear, but can talk. His evil form is more creepy, since he has red eyes.
Personality
Yawk is a traitor. He asks help from others without letting them know he is evil. He is actually a very brutish and feral type.
Trivia
- Yawk's name and overall design is derived from the Yakwawiak, a dangerous monster from Native American folklore that appears as a giant bear and is extremely hostile to humans.
- While it's unknown how exactly Yawk was cursed and by who, storyboard artist Kelly Turnbull proposed the idea that he was cursed by Hex due to him being a rival.
